When is the Right Time to Book a Maternity Photoshoot?

Updated: Jul 26

If you’re expecting and starting to think about maternity photos, you might be wondering... When is the right time to book a session? It’s a question I hear all the time, and I totally get it! You want to feel confident, look beautiful, and capture your bump at just the right moment.

As a maternity photographer based on Sydney’s Northern Beaches, I’ve worked with lots of mums-to-be to find that sweet spot, so here’s everything you need to know about when (and why) to book your maternity photoshoot.

  • The Best Time for Maternity Photos: Weeks 28 to 34

The ideal time for your maternity session is usually between 28 and 34 weeks into your pregnancy. Here's why this window works so well:

  • Your belly has that gorgeous, well-rounded shape that photographs beautifully.

  • Most mums still feel comfortable and mobile during this stage, which makes the session more relaxed and enjoyable.

  • After 34 weeks, you may start to feel a bit more tired, and there's always the chance bub could arrive earlier than expected.

That said, every pregnancy is different! If you're having twins or a high-risk pregnancy, we might aim a little earlier, around 26–28 weeks. We can always chat about what feels right for your body and your pregnancy journey.

  • Book Early to Lock In the Best Dates

Planning ahead can make a big difference. I recommend getting in touch and booking your session around the halfway point of your pregnancy, ideally between 20–24 weeks. This gives us plenty of time to:

  • Choose a location that suits your style

  • Plan wardrobe options that make you feel amazing

  • Secure your preferred time of day (like golden hour for that dreamy beach light)

Maternity sessions are often booked out weeks in advance, especially in spring and autumn, so early booking helps ensure we find a date that works for you.

  • Consider the Season and Location

Living in Sydney’s Northern Beaches means we’re spoiled with natural beauty, think golden sands, lush headlands, and glowing sunsets. But season and timing still play a role in shaping the look and feel of your photos.

Here’s how each season works around here:

  • Spring (September to November): One of the most popular times! Beaches are quieter, the weather is mild, and the light is soft and golden.

  • Summer (December to February): Expect vibrant colours and warm tones. We can beat the heat by scheduling your session early in the morning or at sunset.

  • Autumn (March to May): The light is amazing, and the weather is still warm without the summer crowds; perfect for dreamy, relaxed photos.

  • Winter (June to August): If you love moodier tones and dramatic skies, winter beach sessions can be stunning (and the beaches are beautifully empty).

Whether you’re picturing sunlit sand dunes, a quiet coastal trail, or a cosy at-home shoot, we’ll plan your session around what feels most you.

  • Think About the Look You’re Going For

Your maternity session should reflect your style, energy, and personality. When we chat about timing, we’ll also talk about the overall vibe you’re after.

Some things to consider:

  • Do you want a glowing, ethereal feel with flowing dresses and soft light?

  • Prefer something more casual and relaxed barefoot on the beach or snuggled at home?

  • Feeling amazing and want to showcase a full, bold belly, or keep things subtle and natural?

Whatever your vision, I’ll guide you through choosing a time that supports the look and energy you want to capture.

  • Already Past 34 Weeks? It’s Not Too Late!

If you’re nearing the end of your pregnancy and just now thinking about photos, don’t stress! I've done beautiful sessions with mums at 35, 36, even 38 weeks.

  • We’ll work around your comfort and energy levels.

  • I'll help you feel relaxed and supported the whole way through.

  • There’s still time to create something meaningful before baby arrives.

Just reach out as soon as possible so we can try to fit you in!

  • Every Pregnancy is Unique, Let’s Plan What’s Right for You

Ultimately, the best time to book your maternity session is the time that works best for you. My goal is to help you feel confident, calm, and connected, so we’ll plan everything in a way that honours your body, your journey, and this fleeting chapter before your baby is in your arms.
